Okay, he didn’t ask for the weather. But according to a local Washington DC news channel, he did dial 911 to complain about the traffic. From WJLA:
A 911 tape, reportedly of Sen. John McCain (web|news|bio) ‘s brother Joe, could prove controversial for the McCain camp since the call was not for an emergency, but rather to complain about being stuck in traffic.
The call came into Alexandria’s 911 system on October 21.
Operator: 911 state your emergency
Caller: It’s not an emergency, but do you know why on one side at the damn drawbridge of 95 traffic is stopped for 15 minutes and yet traffic’s coming the other way?
Operator: Sir, are you calling 911 to complain about traffic? (pause)
Caller: “(Expletive) you.” (caller hangs up)
The astonished 911 operator calls him back — which I think is also standard practice whenever a 911 call is ended abruptly like this to make sure everything is o.k. So this is what happened when they called back:
The complaint call about traffic on the Wilson Bridge forced the 911 dispatcher to call back. The voice mail on the other end, appears to belong to Joe McCain, brother of presidential candidate, John McCain.
“Hi this is Joe McCain. I can’t take this message now because I’m involved in a very (inaudible) important political project. I hope on November 4th we have elected John.”
This story is upsetting on two levels. First of all, the anger and arrogance of Joe McCain is disgusting, if not a familiar McCain family trait. I cross this same bridge all the time because I live on one side of it and my parents live on the other. And anyone in the Washington DC area will tell you, it gets backed up. It just does. It’s too many lanes siphoning down into too few lanes (although at least those few lanes are not full of potholes anymore.) When you want to know if there’s an accident ahead, you tune into WTOP radio.
The other thing that I find upsetting about this story, though, is that this man tied up the emergency services just to complain about his own inconvenience. Who knows what other calls were trying to come through while he wanted a traffic report. I mean, what if something happened at my parents’ house in Alexandria and they were trying to call 911, while the operators were busy with people like Joe McCain?
I hope there’s a special place in hell for people like Joe and John McCain. Meanwhile, I hope he gets fined for misuse of emergency services.
