Wednesday Poetry Break: Song Lyric Edition

Yesterday marked the 29th anniversary of the death of John Lennon. I was reminded of that by the radio last night, and the station played a beautiful cover of Lennon’s classic “Imagine.” It was performed by the amazing (and also tragically gone from us much too early) Eva Cassidy. I found a video on YouTube that has some nice images to accompany her version below the lyrics. I hope you enjoy it.

Imagine

Imagine there’s no heaven
It’s easy if you try
No hell below us
Above us only sky
Imagine all the people
Living for today…

Imagine there’s no countries
It isn’t hard to do
Nothing to kill or die for
And no religion too
Imagine all the people
Living life in peace…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will be as one

Imagine no possessions
I wonder if you can
No need for greed or hunger
A brotherhood of man
Imagine all the people
Sharing all the world…

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world will live as one

— John Lennon

  1. My heart cries each time I read or hear these words. Not because the dream is impossible; it is that the possiblity overflows with such an abundance of love, it is overwhelming.
