Photo for Thought

I’ve read a few reports of people looting, including Yahoo reporting “Haitians are cowering in fear as armed looters scavenge through their ruined capital …”  Not being there, of course, we don’t know what’s really going on. But I cringe a little bit at these words, remembering the reporting of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina — photos of African Americans scavenging for food described as “looting,” while images of whites doing the same thing were described as “resourceful.”

Whatever may be going on elsewhere in Haiti, there are people such as these who are behaving quite civilly while living in unbelievable circumstances.

  1. Listen, if I were stuck in the rubble of an earthquake without food or water for four days, I might do some looting myself, and I think most people would do the same–especially people with little kids who are starving and dehydrated.
Racists just love to show images of unruly people of color, but the crisis in Haiti is not about color, it’s about a devastating earthquake that decimated an already dirt poor nation.
